My guess is they are getting ready to put on the new NFPA standard Chevron stripes on the back. I hate the look of those new rear stripes.

why the black plate then..... ??
I just looked again. I don't believe that it is black in color, i think that is just shadow and the illusion it's black. They just either covered the existing diamond plate with the smooth metal, or replaced what was there with the smooth metal. I don't know for sure, but this would be my best guess. I know a lot of departments are adding these Chevron stripes to be NFPA compliant. Brian
