Can anyone tell me whats the difference between apparatus that is a engine but has fire - rescue on it and a apparatus that is just considered rescue.

It all depends on the jurisdiction usually. Generally speaking though, if a unit says "fire-rescue" on it the apparatus is equipped for firefighting and some type of rescue function, maybe even just EMS first response. Again, this varies by jurisdiction. Units marked only with "rescue" usually have no firefighting capabilities, but again this can vary from location to location. For years the rescue company in Baltimore was designated and known as "Engine 1", even though they didn't run a pumper. Other parts of the country run a pumper as a rescue company but may use the designation of "rescue" or "rescue pumper".

normally a rescue is a specilized fire unit. It usally has no pump or fire hose on it.
