I reasently got a 1/32 Squad 61 and saw that it was different from the regular engines like Engine 68.
Can you tell me the difference between a Squad Engine and a normal Engine?
For example, I saw that the back of the Squad is higher then the back of an Engine where they keep the hoses.
Doest the Squad Engine has more or less functions then a normal Engine?
Question to FDNY firefighters
though, not in the FDNY i believe squads are part of the Special Ops? And are able to perform the duty of HAZMAT, Rescues, and Marine type rescues? From my NYC visit I think I remembered that they were equipped with both Ladder Company or Engine Company equipment? Please correct me if I'm wrong!
I am NOT an FDNY FF either, but will gladly share what I have been told.
Lefty is indeed correct. Squad Co.'s and Rescue Co.'s are both are a part of the Ranks and of SOC (Special Operations Command). Think of this like high school.
Engine Co.'s are the Freshmen to the job.
Truck Co.'s are the Sophmores with a little more responsibility than "puttin' wet stuff on the red stuff".
Squad Co.'s respond to ALL working fires in their MULTIPLE districts. As where one Engine has one area of responsibility, IE a District, Squads have the ability to go to multiple districts wherever there is a working fire. Primarly they back up the First Due Engine Co.s. Secondary is their highly trained abilities to respond for Technical Rescue (Confined Space / Trench), High Angle / Vertical Rescue and Hazardous Materials Incidents (with Their Dedicated Haz-Mat Teams). Additionally, upon arrival to ANY working fire, Squad Co.'s can and do perform the greatest good to every other Fire Fighter on the scene. That would be Rescue and RIC / RIT (Rapid Intervention Co. / Rapid Int. Team). To be a Member of a Squad Co. You have to know Your Stuff and have the Chops to get the job done. These Men truly are "Special". I would like to say that the Rescue Co's specialize in Rescue and RIC / RIT. Both Squad and Rescue Co. Men are indeed the Best of The Best. Much more could be said. Any other questions about this subject email me, I will provide several links and resources. Hope this helps!
Oh, I have the greatest respect for any FF no matter what His Co. or Position. Engines, Trucks, Squads, Rescues, ARFF ...it's ALL the Greatest Job in the World!
HA HA
Although I'm certain that the Men on the FDNY Squads and Rescues would like the word "Elite", I think the word "Special" is more appropriate. Either works. Again, they are the very best at what they do. I'm not entirely certain of this, so I really shouldn't speak out of place, but I "THINK" they are all Veteran Firefighters. No Rookies and No Probationary FF's allowed.
Okay thanks for the answers lefty91101 and unnsunghero.
If an FDNY firefighter wants to react please do so,it would be appreciated.
Squads can be used as either an engine or a truck. They are equipped with an engine and have truck tools. They have training in High-angle, haz-mat,collapse, confined space and water rescue.
Most squads have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd due response area, in which they'll respond as an engine company. Outside their response areas they take their instructions from the incident commander. They can stretch a line or due truck work. They are not used as a FAST(RIT team) truck, but can be put to use in incidents when a man is down.
There is no set time limit you must have to get into Squad or Rescue, but they won't entertain you if you have almost no time on the job.
